Product Review: LUSH Fresh Handmade Cosmetics

I'm telling you, the day I walk past a LUSH store without going inside, you will truly be witnessing a miracle. You know that signature LUSH scent, and when it fills my nostrils, I just can't resist. Not that I necessarily purchase something every time, but I do take a whiff of almost everything in the store, until I can't smell a thing anymore.

Recently, I found myself floating, nose first, into a LUSH store again. I don't know what it is about autumn and winter, but that's LUSH season for me. I purchased quite a few products; some old faves and some brand spankin' new ones I haven't tried before. The sales assistant was super helpful, even though his English wasn't great, he was very friendly and suggested some products which I'm in love with now. He also gave me some samples to try, and a free LUSH umbrella. (They had some kind of promotion.)

Oh, I just adore this brand, as they are against animal testing, it's natural, and the products are made by hand (on each product there will be a sticker with the person's name that made that specific product). Hmm... not so sure about that... Anyway, although originally from the UK, you can now buy LUSH almost everywhere in the world. You can also return your empties to the store for them to recycle.

Since I've had my LUSH haul about two weeks ago, I've been able to try each of these products at least a couple of times. I find myself really looking forward to shower time, and enjoy my little LUSH pampering sessions. It's also a huge plus that my bathroom now smells like a LUSH store a.k.a heaven!

Believe me, I know how overwhelming a LUSH store can be; there's just so many smells, so many colors, and you have the sales assistant following you around. And sometimes it's really hard to choose which products to actually buy. As they are a little on the pricey side, I know it's not possible to just load up on all the delicious products and try them all out, so I decided to share my thoughts on each of the products I got. Maybe you'd like to try some of them.

The Olive Branch Shower Gel

"A gentle Mediterranean inspired gel with skin softening olive oil for dry skin. Shower with the citrus scents of mandarin and lemon with just a hint of fresh orange groves." - LUSH

The Fiancé and I both fell in love with this shower gel last year around winter time, and it's the first time I've repurchased it since. This is my favorite LUSH shower gel and it smells fantastic (well, just like most things in the store...).

Shake it!

Before each use, remember to give it a good shake, as the olive oil in this product will be on the top. I definitely definitely recommend this product!

Sweetie Pie Shower Jelly

"Mineral-rich carrageenan extract is the seaweed that gives our jellies their jiggle. If you're a fan of sweet, fruity fragrances you'll fall in love with Sweetie Pie." - LUSH

This product smells super sweet, hence the name, and should not be used by a person that does not appreciate a little shimmer. I adore the smell, but the texture is a little weird.

It's a jello-like blob which I had to cut into smaller pieces to use. (Way too much effort for a relaxing shower time, I'd say.) I think this will be a hit or miss for some people.

Rub Rub Rub Shower Scrub

"Made with refreshing, mineral-rich sea salt for subtle scrubbing and smoother skin." - LUSH

I love me a good shower scrub, but find that many are too harsh for my sensitive skin. This one, however, is perfect! It leaves my skin so soft and smooth.

But, a word of warning; Don't let the product get to "sensitive areas", if you catch my drift, as it will burn like nothing else. Unfortunately, I had to learn this the hard way... LOVE this product though!

Mask of Magnaminty Face and Back Pack

"We blend bentonite gel into our recipe to clean the pores deeply and tighten at the same time." - LUSH

Because of my sensitive skin (even a gentle mask will leave my skin red and irritated) I was a little hesitant to get this face and back mask, but in the end decided to give it a whirl. I couldn't be happier with this purchase! Firstly, it smells so fresh and minty, and it gives the skin a gentle tingle when wearing it.

The mask will dry out after wearing it for about 10 minutes, and after rinsing, it left my skin smooth and moisturized. Absolutely worth it, and I'll definitely repurchase it again.

Dream Cream Body Lotion

"When oats infuse with water, they create soothing milk, used for centuries to calm the skin." - LUSH

I rarely buy body lotions, as I've been using my old faithful, Nivea Q10 Plus for many years. I just couldn't resist the smell, bought it, and I haven't looked back. The lotion is very hydrating and definitely gives my all time favorite a run for its money.

I'm not sure how this one will go down in the hot, humid summer months, but it's definitely great for the dry colder months. I highly recommend this lotion.

Mint Julips Lip Scrub

"As the base of our lip scrubs, Fair Trade sugar makes for an effective exfoliant." - LUSH

I've always used the Bubblegum Lip Scrub, but recently threw it out when I realized it's past its expiration date. I decided to try a new one, and I've been loving this scrub.

The texture is the same as the Bubblegum one, but smells different. A very nice pampering product which removes all the dry/dead skin from your lips. And, it's edible, so give it a lick if you want.

Free Samples:

Dirty Springwash Shower Gel

I'm not a huge fan of the smell, it's a little too toothpaste-y for my taste. But different strokes for different folks, so you just might like it. Give it a whiff next time you're in the store and decide for yourself.

Cynthia Sylvia Stout Shampoo

I'm not one to stray from my beloved Kérastase Bain Satin shampoo, but I was on a LUSH high and gave this shampoo a fair shot. I felt that it really cleaned and clarified my hair, and it definitely gave it a lot of shine. I'm still not giving up my Kérastase just yet.

Breath of Fresh Air Toner Water

To me, toner is toner. As long as it doesn't contain alcohol, I'll use most brands. I wouldn't necessarily purchase this toner, it smells like medicine and it didn't blow my hair back. I'm sticking to my Avène Cleanance Toner for now.

What is your all-time favorite LUSH product?

*Disclaimer
I'm not being paid by LUSH Cosmetics or any other company to write this article. These are my personal and honest opinions and all products were purchased by myself. Some of the products were free samples that I received with my purchase.

October Favorites 2013

Hey folks, it's fall time! Finally! Taipei is always so weird this time of the year. One day it's still warm and humid, and the next day I'm in my leggings and can't leave the house without a cardigan. But I'm not complaining, I'm totally on board with it getting colder.

Here are the things I've been loving during the month of October:

1. CHANEL Le Vernis Elixir

When CHANEL released their fall nail polishes, I immediately fell in love with the shade, Elixir, and couldn't wait to get it. Since I bought it, I've basically been wearing it non-stop and keep reapplying it every week. I'm obsessed with this color for fall and I'm sure I'll be wearing it throughout winter as well.

2. LUSH Mask of Magnaminty

I recently got my annual LUSH fix, and I'll be reviewing all the products I got, soon. I've been so pleasantly surprised by this specific product. I've been applying it two or three times a week, and just adore the scent and the way it makes my skin feel after using it. The Fiancé also really likes this! (Yes, I made him put on the mask with me...) But he also says his skin is very soft after using it, so who's laughing now?

3. SAINT JAMES Meridien II

I'm a huge fan of the Saint James striped tops and recently got the Meridien II. I got the XXS, but it's still a little baggy, which is how it's supposed to look. The fabric is so nice and the quality is fantastic. Will I ever have too many striped shirts!?

4. Tory Burch Chelsea Ballet Flats

I took full advantage of Shopbop.com's recent "Friends and Family 25% off" event and got a few new items that's been lingering in my Wish List for a while. My favorite has been the red Chelsea ballet flats from Tory Burch. I used to have a pair from Zara that I loved, but it was time for some new classic red ballet flats. These are so comfortable, and just like most Tory Burch flats, I sized up half a size for the perfect fit.

5. DIPTYQUE Figuier candle

This candle is beyond lovely and I'm bummed out that I've finally burned through it. I'm definitely repurchasing it again, because it's such a nice scent to have in the house year-round.

What's your favorites from October?

5 Things I Love...

I Love...

1. ... waking up next to the love of my life every morning, and seeing his sleepy smile when I kiss him goodbye before I go to work.

2. ... that I've made the decision to do the Focus T25 fitness challenge. I can't wait to start!

3. ... the group of elderly people that exercise outside my building every morning. They are always there, blasting their music, smiling and having a ball. It just brightens up my mornings.

4. ... that this week is over. I don't usually wish away the time, but for some reason this one was emotionally taxing.

5. ... Cam's character on Modern Family. He is so hilarious!

Happy Friday, peeps!

FOCUS T25 Day 0

Yes, it's true! I'm taking on another ridiculous exercise program. With my wedding and summer vacation in South Africa coming up soon, it was time for my jelly belly and me to jump on the fitness wagon again. (My performance in the gym has been less than stellar lately...) I was actually toying with the crazy idea of doing the INSANITY program again, but then I found this 25-minute-5-days-a-week wonder of a workout called Focus T25.

Focus T25 is the latest high-intensity fitness program created by Shaun T, the same person who brought us INSANITY. The program consists of two cycles; Alpha and Beta. (There is a third cycle called Gamma, but it's not mandatory). Each workout is ONLY 25 minutes (yes, that's right!) which is awesome if you have a busy lifestyle. Also, you only have to work out 5 days a week, instead of 6 days a week, like INSANITY

It promises amazing results (of course, only if you're willing to work out hard!) and I'm totally willing to give up 25 minutes of my precious day, you know, just in case I can get my body to look like those before and after ones on the promotional video.

Where do I sign up, you ask?! Well, once again I've rounded up a couple of workout buddies (two of my co-workers) and we'll be starting the program on Monday, October 28th. You're welcome to join us in this challenge.

The schedule:

Focus T25 Alpha & Beta Phase Schedule

Just like INSANITY, this workout can also be done in the comfort of your home; all you need are the Focus T25 DVDs, a TV or computer, a resistance band (but I think you can substitute this with some light free weights) and some space to move around.

Of course, I'll be documenting my entire experience and update you guys weekly here on Pretty.Random.Things., just like I did while doing INSANITY.

So what are you waiting for, get the Focus T25 program, download the schedules and dust off those trainers! For only 25 minutes a day, it's worth giving it a go, right?

5 Things I Love...

I Love...

1. ... the sudden temperature drop in Taipei this past week. We're getting closer and closer to sweater weather!

2. ... that I now have more than 1000 followers on Instagram. And I just posted my 500th photo yesterday.

3. ... my man. He is the most amazing person on this planet, and maybe even on all the planets. But, I might be a little biased...

4. ... dogs. And it's been wonderful taking care of our friends' dog these past 3 weeks. I'm really going to miss him when they get back from vacation.

5. ... that I'll be home in South Africa in less than 3 months.

Have a fabulous Friday, everyone!

ASOS Autumn Haul 2013

Although Taiwan hasn't displayed much decent autumn-like weather yet, I am so ready for it to get colder. I'm ready to pack away the summer dresses, shorts and sandals and replace them with sweaters, leggings, jeans and boots.

It's no secret that I'm addicted to online shopping... and ASOS.com seems to be my drug of choice lately. I'm sure most of you know about this site. I love that they offer free international shipping and that they have a huge variety of items; from very affordable to designer. So there really is something for everyone! And believe me, you can ALWAYS find something you like. Especially when they're having one of their 10% to 20% discounts...

Of course, now that October is upon us, it's only natural to get some new things for fall and winter. I've been in the mood for some comfy clothes for everyday wear, and here are some of the items I got from ASOS.com recently:

1. Daisy Street Fisherman's Jumper

Daisy Street Fisherman's Jumper ($32)

I just couldn't not buy this item of cozy goodness. Doesn't it just look perfect for those cool autumn days? At first, I couldn't decide between this color or black, but then figured I'd probably wear the lighter one more often. It is actually a very light blush color, and not cream as in the picture.

2. ASOS LAILA Ballet Flats

ASOS LAILA Ballet Flats ($28.50)

Yes, this is my second pair of these flats. That's how much I like them! Most of my ballet flats are very expensive and I don't want to wear them every day going to work (where I have to take them off anyway). So these cheaper ones are perfect for an everyday shoe that I don't mind getting caught in the rain in.

3. Vila Cable Knit Jumper

Vila Cable Knit Jumper ($40)

I'm so happy that I managed to snatch this one up before my size and color got sold out. This sweater is so soft and I just know I'm going to wear the hell out of it.

4. Vila Ankle Length Jeans

Vila Ankle Length Jeans ($44.50)

I was in the market for some new black jeans and took a chance on these. I've never ordered jeans from this brand, so I was a little nervous about the size. But, luckily they fit perfectly and they are so comfortable! They fit tight like leggings, but minus the camel toe, so I can wear it with shorter tops.

5. ASOS Petite Boyfriend Sweat

ASOS Petite Boyfriend Sweat ($36)

Oh my goodness, this sweatshirt is comfortable and the lining inside is SO soft. These sweatshirts come in a bunch of colors, and I really wanted this one in the "charcoal" as well, but my size was already sold out, unfortunately.

6. Vero Moda printed sweat top

Vero Moda Printed Sweat Top ($12.50)

I love the printed rose design on this sweatshirt and I'm glad I was able to snatch it up in my size and on sale before this specific design got sold out. I haven't even been able to wear it, but in my head I see myself wearing it with some leggings and UGG boots.

7. ASOS Longline Woven Cami

ASOS Longline Woven Cami ($27)

Now that it's blazer season, I figured I needed a new cami to wear underneath all of them. I got it in one size too big though, and although their return policy is easy and free, I'd rather make a trip to the seamstress in my neighborhood and get her to shorten the straps. Otherwise, "the ladies" might just pop out to say hello...

8. ASOS Petite Boyfriend T-Shirt

ASOS Petite Boyfriend T-Shirt ($18)

This shirt is perfect for those lying-around-the-house days. I wear it with leggings, jeans or denim shorts, depending on the temperature.

9. ASOS Chunky Jumper

ASOS Chunky Jumper ($50)

Yes, another sweater... I "needed" it, okay! This one just looked way too cozy to pass up.

10. TOMS Canvas Classic

TOMS Canvas Classics ($62)

I'm a huge fan of TOMS and this is my fifth pair. They are perfect for when you walk a lot, like I do, and they are super comfortable.

11. Vero Moda Crew Neck T-Shirt

Vero Moda Crew Neck T-Shirt ($14)

I rarely go into a clothing store without buying a brand spanking new white t-shirt... And that includes online shops.

So these are some of the new things I've gotten from ASOS.com this season and I can't wait to be able to wear everything. Maybe there's something that you'd like to check out? If so, let me know what you purchased.

The Liebster Award

What a nice surprise; Pretty.Random.Things. received another blog award! This time we were awarded the Liebster Award by Michelle of Pretty in the East. Thank you so much, Michelle!

What is the Liebster Award, you ask? It is an award given to smaller blogs to expose them to a bigger audience of readers. A pretty cool idea, I think!

To formally accept this award, I have to do the following:

1. Link back and recognize the blogger who nominated you
2. Answer ten questions given to you by the blogger who nominated you
3. Nominate ten other bloggers for the award.
4. Create ten questions for your nominees to answer.
5. Notify your nominees.

Here are the questions, composed by Michelle, for me to answer:

1. How long have you been blogging and what made you start?
I've been blogging since June 2011, so that means I'm at the 2 years and 4 months mark as of today. I started blogging because I was bored and wanted my own little online space where I can share the things that I love, make lists, post pictures and interact with interesting people from around the world.
2. What type of post(s) do you enjoy reading and writing the most?
I enjoy reading fashion and beauty posts (I mostly like looking at pictures) and humorous diary-like lifestyle posts. My favorite posts to write are lists... about everything.
3. What are three of your favorite songs, either current or classic?
There's no way I can answer this. I have a very very eclectic taste in music and if I had to make this choice, we might be here for days and days.
4. What are you most inspired by?
I'm mostly inspired by images, as I'm a very visual person. I'm also inspired by strong, independent, successful women.
5. If you had $500 to spend on one makeup brand, which would you choose and why?
I think I'll go with MAC. I like the quality of their products and adore their lipsticks and makeup brushes.
6. How would you describe your style?
Classic, simple, comfortable, chic, feminine, preppy.
7. Where would you go on your dream vacation?
I've always wanted to go to French Polynesia.
8. Where do you see yourself ten years from now?
In ten years I'll be 38. AHHH! I see myself living the simple life with my man, in a beautiful house with a big yard and at least two dogs. Maybe a kid or two, a successful business and, of course, being healthy and happy.
9. What are your top three ‘holy grail’ products you can’t live without (makeup, skincare, bath, body, etc.)?
Products that I keep repurchasing, and that I'll probably use for the rest of my life, are Nivea's Q10 Plus body lotion, Lancôme Hypnôse mascara and Kérastase Masquintense hair treatment.
10. What are you looking forward to the most this fall and/or winter?
I'm really looking forward to wearing all my cozy sweaters, drinking lots of tea and cuddling with my man on those cold days.

Here are the 10 bloggers I nominate:
2. Fariha of Fariha is Here
3. Carrie of Better with Cheddar
4. Nelleke of Darling Nel
5. Jess of 26 & Not Counting
6. Meg of I go by Meg
7. Shannon of Awash with Wonder
8. Jessica of Blog with Benefits
9. Ashley of All that Glitters
10. Amanda of A Good Hue

Here are my questions for the bloggers that I have nominated:
1. What is your ultimate travel destination?
2. What is your favorite online shopping site?
3. How many times a day do you check social media?
4. Link your most popular blog post EVER! (The post that got the most views.)
5. Are you a cat or dog person?
6. What is your most worn lipstick?
7. What would you do with $1 million?
8. Are you a morning person or a night owl?
9. Do you think you'll blog forever? Or do you have a cut-off age?
10. What is your worst habit?
Have a great week, everyone!

5 Things I Love...

I Love...

1. ... that we had a little midweek break yesterday from work because of a national holiday in Taiwan. AND, that is was an absolutely gorgeous day in Taipei!

2. ... people who don't take everything so seriously, can look on the bright side of life, and that make me laugh.

3. ... stationery. I don't know if it's a teacher-thing? I can absolutely NOT walk past a stationery store.

4. ...  that everything is going so well with the plans for our wedding. You can read my latest update here.

5. ... ice cream! And I've had A LOT of it this past week after getting a wisdom tooth removed.

Have a happy weekend, everyone!
