Thankful Thursday

Today I'm thankful...

1. ... that I only have two work days left before heading to South Africa for summer vacation, to see my friends and family, and for our wedding.

2. ... for my family. I'm blessed with a huge family, whom I love with all my heart. The Fiancé has a big family, too, and I can't wait for our two families to become one.

3. ... for little surprises that make life just so much easier.

4. ... for a warm bed, a fridge full of food, and a roof over my head.

5. ... for a healthy body and mind.

What are you thankful for today?

My 2013 Highlights

I really didn't think it was possible to top the absolutely unforgettable year of 2012. But as I looked at pictures of our travels and reflected on all the amazing things we did in 2013, I think it's safe to say that 2013 was right up there! We had an incredibly blessed year, which I'm so thankful for, and here are my personal highlights.

Back to the Motherland

In January I made the journey back to South Africa, and had an amazing time with my family and friends. The weather was perfect! Blue skies, sunny days, warm evenings; I couldn't ask for anything more. It was nice to just relax at home, bake with my mom, chat with my dad and lay out by the pool. I also helped my mom with all the finishing touches for my brother's wedding.

Adding to the Family

I'm so happy that The Fiancé and I were able to attend my brother's wedding. He got married in our small town's beautiful church, where we used to go growing up, and it was very special. My new sister-in-law's family came all the way from Ukraine for the occasion. Although they can't speak English, we had a blast with them! I'm ecstatic to have gained another sister.

In the Bridal Party

I also got to be one of my new sister-in-law's bridesmaids. It was my first time being a bridesmaid, and it was so nice to be a part of the wedding like that. Us girls had such a fun time getting ready together and sharing the special day with them.

Paris!

I was over the moon when The Fiancé, then The Boyfriend, suggested that we go to Paris for a week over the summer. Hell yeah! Paris has always been one of the places that I had to visit, and my dream finally came true. When I think back on our time there, it does feel like a dream; The best dream EVER!

He put a ring on it

The Fiancé had a sneaky plan for wanting to go to Paris, and proposed to me on our first night there. He put the most beautiful ring on my finger while we were having champagne at the Champ de Mars, just as the Eiffel Tower was lighting up. It was one of the most romantic experiences of my entire life and I'll never forget it.

Photo shoot in Paris, anyone?

We thought; why not take our engagement pics in Paris!? I'm so happy we decided to have our photo shoot there, as now we have all these beautiful pictures of us around the City of Lights. I still look at those pictures and think "Who are those lucky people!? Oh yeah, that's us!".

Planning The Big Day

Some days aren't so fun, but in general wedding planning has been a blast! My mom, bridesmaids and our wedding coordinator have all been wonderful in helping me plan our special day. It's been tricky planning our South African wedding all the way from Taiwan, but it's going to be so worth it. The wedding is in less than 5 weeks, and I'm about to burst from excitement!

The Maid of Honor

Last year one of my friends here in Taiwan asked me to be her Maid of Honor at her wedding banquet. Of course I accepted! What an honor. The wedding was about a week and a half ago and it was so much fun! She looked stunningly beautiful, and we had such a good time.

Almost at 1 million views!

Pretty.Random.Things. is almost at a million views!?! That's unbelievable to me! Who reads this rambling!?! I'm so thankful for all my loyal readers and I love hearing from you, so drop me a line whenever you want to chat. Thanks for the support!

Furry Friends

I've wanted a dog for sooo long, but we aren't allowed one in our apartment right now. But, when our friends asked if we could babysit their dog for 3 weeks over the summer, I immediately said yes and decided that I'll just deal with the landlord if we were to get into trouble. (Rather ask for forgiveness than ask for permission, I always say...) It was so nice having a dog in the house and it just made me want a dog of my own even more!

Our Taiwan Family is growing

We've lived in Taiwan for a long time now and have made many lifelong friends, but it's always nice to meet new people. This year some of our friends from the States moved to Taiwan, and I couldn't be happier to have them here.

Happy Friends and Family

Another year, another batch of healthy babies, happy engagements, adventures and wedding bells. I'm so incredibly thankful that my friends and family are healthy and happy. 2013 have been a very exciting year for some of my friends and family, as they welcomed cute pink-feet into the world, got married, traveled to new places and got engaged. I wish you all the best in 2014!

Celebrating our 4-year Anniversary

The Fiancé and I celebrated our 4-year anniversary this year in April. Four happy years have flown by, and I still feel like I love him more and more every day.

2013 surely was a fantastic year for us! I'm so grateful for our blessings and the wonderful people that I call my friends and family. I'm super excited for what 2014 has in store for us. Can it possibly top 2013? We'll see..

I wish all of you an unforgettable 2014; a year filled with good health, unbelievable happiness and unforgettable new adventures.

HAPPY 2014!

5 Things I Love...

I Love...

1. ... that even though I had to work on Christmas day, it really wasn't that bad and I still ended up having an amazing Christmas evening with great food, prezzies and company.

2. ... that our summer vacation in South Africa is coming up so soon. Only 2 weeks to go! And that brings me to number 3...

3. ... packing for a trip! I can make lists, organize and plan... And you know how excited that makes me!

4. ... that next week is a 4-day work week. (Obviously, I'm totally over this semester and so ready for vacation...)

5. ... that I've finally persuaded The Fiancé to watch FRIENDS with me. He's been avoiding it ever since we met. (I know, right!? Who doesn't love FRIENDS!?) We are currently in season 3.

This will be my last 5 Things I Love... post for a while. Next week, I'm starting a new series which will be posted weekly on Thursdays. So stay tuned!

Happy Freakin' Friday!

Christmas Fail

I can't say that I didn't feel like sobbing out loud this morning when I had to wake up at the ungodly hour of 6am. And not just because it's so damn early and so cold, or the fact that The Fiancé was still in a deep snooze in our cozy bed, totally oblivious to my early morning pity-party. Yes, all those things make my bottom lip quiver as well, but mostly because it's Christmas, and I had to head out to work like it's just some normal day in May.

No matter how much I complain and wallow in self-pity though, Christmas isn't, and probably won't ever be, a public holiday in Taiwan. Even though many foreigners get the day off work, some of us still need to punch the clock like any other day. So, please enjoy Christmas Day with your loved ones, you don't know how lucky you are. I would give ANYTHING to be with my family today! At least I finish work at 4:30pm and can spend the rest of Christmas Day with The Fiancé

Don't feel too bad for me though, get back to your festive cheer, presents, ugly Christmas sweaters, food and family. I'll just be over here, chasing after a bunch of unruly 7-year olds who has no idea why Teacher Liesl isn't smiling today...

Merry Christmas!

5 Things I Love...

I Love...

1. ... how things always have a way of working out they way they should.

2. ... December and all its Christmas festiveness.

3. ... that even though it's getting cool in Taipei, we are still blessed with nice sunny days.

4. ... that it only cost me 300TWD to get my wedding dress altered here in Taipei. (That's about US$10...). And it only took the seamstress 20 minutes to do a beautiful job. Freakin' LOVE Taiwan!

5. ... that Movember is over and I can see The Fiancé's handsome face again.

Have a wonderful weekend!

5 Things I Love...

I Love...

1. ... that it's almost time to put up the Christmas tree and decorate the house. If it wasn't for The Fiancé holding me back, our tree would have been up a couple of weeks ago already...

2. ... cuddling with my man on the couch on a cold day.

3. ... that our wedding is only 2 months away. Excitement overload!

4. ... that my workout buddies and I will finish Month 1 Alpha of Focus T25 this weekend. Next up is 5 weeks of Beta workouts, which are supposedly killers. Bring it!

5. ... that it's finally cold enough for me to wear UGG boots. I don't care if you think they're ugly, they are warm and cozy and comfortable!

Happy Weekend!

5 Things I Love...

I Love...

1. ... coconut oil! It has so many uses, and I can't get enough of it.

2. ... my family; and I'm so blessed to have a big one.

3. ... that it's Thanksgiving next week! Turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. Yes, please!

4. ... Friday evenings, when The Fiancé and I get to catch up on the latest episodes of The Walking Dead and American Horror Story.

5. ... positive people that encourage and support others. "A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle."

Happy Friday!

Wedding Planning Update: 2.5 months to go!

I just can't believe how time flies! Am I really getting married in 2 and a half months!? Well, apparently I am, according to the wedding invitations we sent out to almost two hundred guests in ten different countries. There's officially no turning back! Ha! Not that I'm thinking about doing that in the least bit. I can't wait to marry my best friend, the man of my dreams! (Don't puke on your keyboard... this is a wedding update after all, what did you expect!?)

Since all the big things have already been decided on and booked, we've been focusing on the details. I can tell you right now, I'm not a huge fan of the details. Thank goodness for my mom, who is the queen of details. Actually, she's been the queen of everything in this wedding planning process. I don't know how I would have been able to plan this wedding, from halfway around the world, if it wasn't for her.

Most important update; The Dress has arrived safely in Taiwan from the States. (*happy dance!) I was so excited to receive it, I was basically waiting outside in the street for the FedEx truck to arrive. It's the most beautiful dress I've ever seen and I couldn't be happier! It's everything I could have ever dreamed of. It might have to be taken in a little though, as I apparently have the waist of a 12-year old boy. Next up for me to get, are no less than fabulous shoes, and the accessories that will pull everything together.

My bridesmaids have been more than wonderful, planning their outfits and my bridal shower and bachelorette party. I trust them, and have left them to their own devices regarding the parties (should I be nervous...!?) We have decided on their dresses and they are going to look stunning!

The Fiancé and I went to Hugo Boss and he tried on a beautiful tuxedo, and although (*dramatically fainting with one hand on my temple) he looked so incredibly handsome in it, we figured it's just not worth it for him to buy the tuxedo. When will he ever wear it again!? So he's going to rent one in South Africa.

I'm happy with how everything is going. My mom and I have our Skype sessions where we'll plan a million things in two hours, then she'll discuss what I want with the coordinator, and then she'll report back to me. A pretty good system, I think.

We've only had one hiccup in this entire process (so far) and that has been the part of actually getting married. You know, the legal stuff. I can tell you, it ain't easy marrying a US Citizen. Paperwork, interviews and LOTS of confusion has been our reality these past few weeks. Don't even get me started on South Africa's Department of Home Affairs, I can rant for hours. Things are starting to look better now, and hopefully it will all be sorted out soon.

As The Big Day is getting closer, I've also started having wedding-related nightmares. There was the one where all my guests arrived 6 hours early and I wasn't ready. The one where no-one had prepared speeches. The one with the rainstorm. And, my least favorite, the one where my hair and makeup did NOT come out the way I had planned. I literally woke up crying! Fingers crossed that none of these nightmares will actually come true...

The Liebster Award

What a nice surprise; Pretty.Random.Things. received another blog award! This time we were awarded the Liebster Award by Michelle of Pretty in the East. Thank you so much, Michelle!

What is the Liebster Award, you ask? It is an award given to smaller blogs to expose them to a bigger audience of readers. A pretty cool idea, I think!

To formally accept this award, I have to do the following:

1. Link back and recognize the blogger who nominated you
2. Answer ten questions given to you by the blogger who nominated you
3. Nominate ten other bloggers for the award.
4. Create ten questions for your nominees to answer.
5. Notify your nominees.

Here are the questions, composed by Michelle, for me to answer:

1. How long have you been blogging and what made you start?
I've been blogging since June 2011, so that means I'm at the 2 years and 4 months mark as of today. I started blogging because I was bored and wanted my own little online space where I can share the things that I love, make lists, post pictures and interact with interesting people from around the world.
2. What type of post(s) do you enjoy reading and writing the most?
I enjoy reading fashion and beauty posts (I mostly like looking at pictures) and humorous diary-like lifestyle posts. My favorite posts to write are lists... about everything.
3. What are three of your favorite songs, either current or classic?
There's no way I can answer this. I have a very very eclectic taste in music and if I had to make this choice, we might be here for days and days.
4. What are you most inspired by?
I'm mostly inspired by images, as I'm a very visual person. I'm also inspired by strong, independent, successful women.
5. If you had $500 to spend on one makeup brand, which would you choose and why?
I think I'll go with MAC. I like the quality of their products and adore their lipsticks and makeup brushes.
6. How would you describe your style?
Classic, simple, comfortable, chic, feminine, preppy.
7. Where would you go on your dream vacation?
I've always wanted to go to French Polynesia.
8. Where do you see yourself ten years from now?
In ten years I'll be 38. AHHH! I see myself living the simple life with my man, in a beautiful house with a big yard and at least two dogs. Maybe a kid or two, a successful business and, of course, being healthy and happy.
9. What are your top three ‘holy grail’ products you can’t live without (makeup, skincare, bath, body, etc.)?
Products that I keep repurchasing, and that I'll probably use for the rest of my life, are Nivea's Q10 Plus body lotion, Lancôme Hypnôse mascara and Kérastase Masquintense hair treatment.
10. What are you looking forward to the most this fall and/or winter?
I'm really looking forward to wearing all my cozy sweaters, drinking lots of tea and cuddling with my man on those cold days.

Here are the 10 bloggers I nominate:
2. Fariha of Fariha is Here
3. Carrie of Better with Cheddar
4. Nelleke of Darling Nel
5. Jess of 26 & Not Counting
6. Meg of I go by Meg
7. Shannon of Awash with Wonder
8. Jessica of Blog with Benefits
9. Ashley of All that Glitters
10. Amanda of A Good Hue

Here are my questions for the bloggers that I have nominated:
1. What is your ultimate travel destination?
2. What is your favorite online shopping site?
3. How many times a day do you check social media?
4. Link your most popular blog post EVER! (The post that got the most views.)
5. Are you a cat or dog person?
6. What is your most worn lipstick?
7. What would you do with $1 million?
8. Are you a morning person or a night owl?
9. Do you think you'll blog forever? Or do you have a cut-off age?
10. What is your worst habit?
Have a great week, everyone!

Wedding Planning Update: 3 and a half months to go!

"I'm getting married. I'm going to be a bride", I realized as I was standing in a gorgeous wedding gown, looking at myself in the multiple mirrors of the fitting room in the Vera Wang store. Obviously, I've known for a while that I'm getting married (there was a proposal, a beautiful ring, a party), but seeing myself in a poofy, white dress definitely made everything very very REAL.

The countdown to Our Big Day is officially at the 3.5-month mark. My goodness, in three and a half months I'll be a missus with a new last name. How crazy is that!? To me, very. But a good crazy. I can't wait to celebrate our wedding with loved ones and for The Fiancé to be upgraded to The Husband.

Wedding planning is going at a thousand miles an hour. We've done so much since my last wedding update. We've finalized the cake, made a lot of decisions regarding colors, decor, flowers and all things pretty, and received our wedding invitations, which we'll be sending out at the end of the month.

I've also chosen my hair stylist and makeup artist for the big day, and I've invited my bridesmaids and maid of honor. Luckily, they all agreed to be my minions sidekicks. We've also bought our plane tickets to South Africa and have been helping some of our guests plan their trips there as well.

I've been on a serious hunt for The Dress. Mostly online. I did have an amazing experience trying on dresses at the new Vera Wang store in Taipei. Of course, I fell in love with the most expensive one in the store... Just my luck. Anyway, I'm glad to announce that I've officially found The Dress and it is making its journey from the States to Taiwan as we speak.

Next on our to-do list are picking out wedding rings and finalizing everyone's outfits and accessories. We are also working on the playlist and figuring out which song we want for our first dance. For some reason, this always leads to us finding the most inappropriate songs on YouTube and imagining everyone's faces if we were to dance on one of those. I don't think my 80-something grandmother would appreciate that... I promise we won't, Ouma, it will be something romantic and appropriate and magical.

Time is going by so fast and I'm getting more and more excited as the weeks go by! I can't wait to go to South Africa and have all my friends and family together in one place.

Stay tuned for another wedding update in a month or so. Hopefully by then we would have made a decision about our first dance song... Suggestions are welcome, by the way.

5 Things I Love...

I Love...

1. ... that it's cool enough today for me to wear jeans.

2. ... having a furry friend in the house ( and I'm not talking about the The Fiancé ..) We are taking care of our friends' dog while they are on vacation. He is so cute and cuddly!

3. ... that I've finally found The Dress. I'll post our latest wedding planning update on Pretty.Random.Things. soon.

4. ... the start of a new month. New beginnings, new things.

5. ... quotes. This past week I've been thinking about this one a lot; "Judging someone doesn't define who they are. It defines who you are." - Unknown

Happy Weekend to all of you!

My First Time

If you clicked on this post to read about my first time... you know, that first time... then I'm sorry to disappoint you and your nosy self. However, this will be a post about many of my other firsts. This is the "My Firsts" TAG

What was your first tweet?
"I must be the luckiest person on this planet right now." - April 2009. The fact that this is my very first tweet makes me so happy, because this was around the time I met The Fiancé and I'm pretty sure he was the reason behind this very happy tweet. PS. If you were wondering: "Liesl, how the hell do you find out what your very first tweet is!?", click here.

What was your first Facebook profile pic?
This photo was taken some time during my 3rd year in university which was in 2006. We were at a friend's house party in Cape Town. (Yes, I only got Facebook that year...)

Do you still talk to your first love?
Nope. Although, he is a Facebook "friend" and I wouldn't ignore him if I ran into him somewhere. It was such a long time ago, we were only teenagers.

What was your first alcoholic drink?
I'm pretty sure my very first alcoholic drink was an accidental sip of my grandmother's beloved afternoon whiskey and Diet Coke...

What was your first job?
My first job was as a teenager, working part-time at my parents' shop. I had to restock refrigerators, wait on tables in the café, work at the cash register and eat a lot of soft serve ice cream... oh wait, maybe that last one wasn't mandatory.

What was your first car?
I'm 28 and I've never owned a car. I've always hated driving and only got my driver's license when I was 22. I've lived in Asia for the past 5 and a half years, and use the very convenient public transportation options in Taipei City. Definitely no need for a car here. (Thank goodness...)

Who was the first person to text you today?
My man, of course.

Who was the first person you thought of this morning?
Myself. Don't even pretend that you don't think of yourself first in the morning!

Who was your first grade teacher?
Juffrou (Afrikaans for "teacher") Snyman. She was very sweet and I still remember her very soothing voice.

Where did you go on your first ride on an airplane?
It was a domestic flight; Cape Town to Johannesburg. And on the flight back, a flight attendant came up to me and asked if I'd like to sit in the cockpit for landing at the airport in Cape Town. "Hell yes!", I said, and got to see the magnificent descend around Table Mountain into Cape Town International.

Who was your first best friend & do you still talk?
My first best friend, that I can remember, was when I was about 4 or 5 years old. Her name was Irene and she lived down the street from us. Our dads worked at the same company and I think my mom was friends with her mom, who sadly passed away from cancer when we were around 5 or 6. We were always extremely close, like sisters, until the age of 19 when she passed away in a motorcycle accident. There's not a day that goes by that I don't wish I could talk to her again.

Where was your first sleepover?
I really can't remember the first one, because we had sleepovers at our friends' houses every weekend since I was about 7 years old.

What was the first thing you did this morning?
I drank a glass of water. (I do this every single morning.)

What was the first concert you ever went to?
It must have been some local artist, because we didn't have many international acts coming to South Africa way back when. I think my first international concert was "Black Eyed Peas" in Cape Town, but I might be mistaken.

What was your first broken bone?
Even though I was quite active and stupidly fearless when I was young, I've never broken a bone in my body.

What was your first piercing?
My ears. My mom got them pierced when I was very young, because I didn't have any hair and people thought I was a boy...

What was the first foreign country you've gone to?
Namibia, one of South Africa's neighboring countries. We used to go there every year when I was a little girl and we'd stay at a hot spring resort at the end of the Fish River Canyon.

What was the first movie you remember seeing?
The first movie I saw in the theaters was "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", but I'm not 100% sure about my very first movie ever.

When was your first detention?
I was way too good to ever get detention. Too good to get caught! *wink

Who was your first roommate?
My sister. We shared a room since I can remember until we were teenagers.

What was the first sport you were involved in?
I remember doing all kinds of sports in elementary school; swimming, athletics, netball, tennis. Although, I was never exceptionally good at any of them. I did enjoy being active and running around with my friends playing games. But I've never really had that competitive streak in me.

What is the first thing you do when you get home?
Well... my commute is about 40 minutes and I have a bladder the size of a pea, so I usually have to go to the ladies' room.

When was your first kiss?
I remember a boy kissed me in kindergarten one day when we were playing outside during break time. Or did I kiss him!? I don't remember that well.

If you do this TAG, please leave a link to your post in the comments, I'd love to read it!

5 Things I Love...

I love...

1. ... that Emirates (the airline that my sister, brother and his wife work for) has recently announced flights to Taiwan, which means I'll be able to see them more often, and be able to visit them in Dubai regularly now.

2. ... how I feel after a good workout at the gym.

3. ... dark chocolate. Period.

4. ... looking through old travel photos and daydreaming about future adventures with The Fiancé.

5. ... a friendly smile from a passerby on the street. No, not the creepy kind. Just the regular I'm-having-a-good-day-and-feel-like-smiling kind.

What are you loving today?

Shoe Review: REPETTO Ballerina Cendrillon flats

"I finally have enough pairs of ballet flats", said no girl ever. Most of you know, I love me a good pair of ballerina flats, and it's very very hard for me not to purchase more. Do I need five pairs of nude ballet flats? Probably not. Do I keep buying them? Absolutely. They're just so pretty. Oh well, I've made my peace with my ballerina flat addiction, and so should you!

REPETTO flagship boutique on Rue de la Paix

While in Paris last month, we wandered into the REPETTO flagship boutique on Rue de la Paix. (Okay okay, I twirled in there like a wannabe ballerina and The Fiancé followed, as he didn't really have much of a choice...) He waited patiently for me while I was fluttering around the store, gushing over all the beautiful shoes, and he didn't complain once. (And that's just one of the many reasons why I love him!) What a lovely store. It's so girly and filled to the brim with beautifully made ballet flats and actual ballet shoes. Girly girl heaven!

REPETTO Ballerina Cendrillon in black

I tried on a few pairs and ended up getting the Ballerina Cendrillon in black vegetal-like leather. Can you ever go wrong with a good pair of black ballet flats? And for my birthday this month, I also purchased the Ballerina Cendrillon in taupe vegetal-like leather. (Yes, I buy myself birthday presents...)

Sizing

I'm a US size 7.5 and got these in a European size 40. They definitely advise you to go up a full size when purchasing these flats. Luckily, they are available in half sizes as well, so you'll definitely be able to find a pair that fits perfectly. I do recommend trying on a pair before buying it. But if you plan on buying it online, I would recommend going up a full size.

Fit

From the get-go, these flats felt like I've worn them for years. No need to "wear them in", as they immediately take on the shape of your foot. I haven't experienced any blisters, redness or chafing AT ALL. Which is awesome for a new pair of ballet flats.

Quality

No need to worry if you're getting bang for your buck. The quality of the leather is top-shelf and these will last you a very long time if you take good care of them.

Price

Okay, so here comes the downside; They're not cheap. I paid 185 (about US$247) for my pair in Paris (although I did get a 12% tax refund.) To me, they are worth every penny. The taupe pair I got for a way better price online on sale at FORWARD by Elyse Walker for US$173. Maybe a little extravagant for a pair of ballet flats, but hey, I don't judge others on what they spend their money on.

Final thoughts

I'm thinking that these flats are going to last me more than one season, because of the excellent quality, which is great. But, I do think that the price is a bit steep, and that it's better to try and find it on sale online. Overall, LOVE THESE and will definitely recommend them to other flat-obsessed-females like myself.

Do you have a pair of REPETTO flats?
Where did you purchase them and what did you pay?

Our engagement shoot in Paris ❤

Two days after The Fiancé popped the question in Paris, we had our engagement shoot there. As if getting engaged in Paris in front of the Eiffel Tower wasn't enough, we now have all these gorgeous photos of us out and about in the City of Lights.

We chose David Bacher as our photographer, and it was one of the best decisions we've ever made. He picked us up at our hotel and took us all over the city for our shoot. He made us feel so comfortable and relaxed the whole day. What a nice guy! If it's possible, I like him even more now because our photos came out beautifully and I couldn't be happier.

Honestly, it's so hard choosing my favorites, because I love them all, but here are just a few to give you a little taste.
