My First Time

If you clicked on this post to read about my first time... you know, that first time... then I'm sorry to disappoint you and your nosy self. However, this will be a post about many of my other firsts. This is the "My Firsts" TAG

What was your first tweet?
"I must be the luckiest person on this planet right now." - April 2009. The fact that this is my very first tweet makes me so happy, because this was around the time I met The Fiancé and I'm pretty sure he was the reason behind this very happy tweet. PS. If you were wondering: "Liesl, how the hell do you find out what your very first tweet is!?", click here.

What was your first Facebook profile pic?
This photo was taken some time during my 3rd year in university which was in 2006. We were at a friend's house party in Cape Town. (Yes, I only got Facebook that year...)

Do you still talk to your first love?
Nope. Although, he is a Facebook "friend" and I wouldn't ignore him if I ran into him somewhere. It was such a long time ago, we were only teenagers.

What was your first alcoholic drink?
I'm pretty sure my very first alcoholic drink was an accidental sip of my grandmother's beloved afternoon whiskey and Diet Coke...

What was your first job?
My first job was as a teenager, working part-time at my parents' shop. I had to restock refrigerators, wait on tables in the café, work at the cash register and eat a lot of soft serve ice cream... oh wait, maybe that last one wasn't mandatory.

What was your first car?
I'm 28 and I've never owned a car. I've always hated driving and only got my driver's license when I was 22. I've lived in Asia for the past 5 and a half years, and use the very convenient public transportation options in Taipei City. Definitely no need for a car here. (Thank goodness...)

Who was the first person to text you today?
My man, of course.

Who was the first person you thought of this morning?
Myself. Don't even pretend that you don't think of yourself first in the morning!

Who was your first grade teacher?
Juffrou (Afrikaans for "teacher") Snyman. She was very sweet and I still remember her very soothing voice.

Where did you go on your first ride on an airplane?
It was a domestic flight; Cape Town to Johannesburg. And on the flight back, a flight attendant came up to me and asked if I'd like to sit in the cockpit for landing at the airport in Cape Town. "Hell yes!", I said, and got to see the magnificent descend around Table Mountain into Cape Town International.

Who was your first best friend & do you still talk?
My first best friend, that I can remember, was when I was about 4 or 5 years old. Her name was Irene and she lived down the street from us. Our dads worked at the same company and I think my mom was friends with her mom, who sadly passed away from cancer when we were around 5 or 6. We were always extremely close, like sisters, until the age of 19 when she passed away in a motorcycle accident. There's not a day that goes by that I don't wish I could talk to her again.

Where was your first sleepover?
I really can't remember the first one, because we had sleepovers at our friends' houses every weekend since I was about 7 years old.

What was the first thing you did this morning?
I drank a glass of water. (I do this every single morning.)

What was the first concert you ever went to?
It must have been some local artist, because we didn't have many international acts coming to South Africa way back when. I think my first international concert was "Black Eyed Peas" in Cape Town, but I might be mistaken.

What was your first broken bone?
Even though I was quite active and stupidly fearless when I was young, I've never broken a bone in my body.

What was your first piercing?
My ears. My mom got them pierced when I was very young, because I didn't have any hair and people thought I was a boy...

What was the first foreign country you've gone to?
Namibia, one of South Africa's neighboring countries. We used to go there every year when I was a little girl and we'd stay at a hot spring resort at the end of the Fish River Canyon.

What was the first movie you remember seeing?
The first movie I saw in the theaters was "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", but I'm not 100% sure about my very first movie ever.

When was your first detention?
I was way too good to ever get detention. Too good to get caught! *wink

Who was your first roommate?
My sister. We shared a room since I can remember until we were teenagers.

What was the first sport you were involved in?
I remember doing all kinds of sports in elementary school; swimming, athletics, netball, tennis. Although, I was never exceptionally good at any of them. I did enjoy being active and running around with my friends playing games. But I've never really had that competitive streak in me.

What is the first thing you do when you get home?
Well... my commute is about 40 minutes and I have a bladder the size of a pea, so I usually have to go to the ladies' room.

When was your first kiss?
I remember a boy kissed me in kindergarten one day when we were playing outside during break time. Or did I kiss him!? I don't remember that well.

If you do this TAG, please leave a link to your post in the comments, I'd love to read it!

5 Things I Love...

I love ...

1. ... that, slowly but surely, fall is starting to creep up on Taipei. (I hope!)

2. ... The Fiancé, especially after suggesting an evening of shopping for our date night this weekend. (Could he be any more awesome!?)

3. ... having lots of candles and fresh flowers in my home.

4. ... fresh baked goods.

5. ... Franck, the wedding coordinator, from the Father of the Bride movies.

What random things do you love?

Capturing December: Day 1 to 3

It's December Photo-a-Day Challenge time! At first I was thinking of posting the photos on my blog daily, but then I decided it would be easier to wait a few days to post some pics.

I do, however, post the pics daily on my Twitter and Instagram, so you can check them out on there. If you're feeling up for the challenge as well, it's not too late to join, and don't forget to add the hashtag #ACHdecember to your pictures.

Okay, so here we go with the photos for day 1 to 3:

December 1st - Your view today

On Saturday morning I had a wisdom tooth extracted and afterwards I had no other plan than to veg out in front of the TV for the entire day. The rainy weather and my comfy knitted blanket provided the perfect atmosphere for a day filled with New Girl, How I met your Mother and Australia's Next Top Model.

December 2nd - Favorite holiday movie

Can you believe that this movie was released 22 years ago!? I've always been a huge fan of Home Alone and watch it every year during the holidays. This is my favorite Christmas movie and the sequel to this one, where he was in New York, is a close second.

December 3rd - Red

This is one of the Christmas sweaters that I bought last year...and... it's red! Perfect for today's picture. I haven't worn it yet this year, because obviously a Christmas sweater with reindeer on it might be frowned upon outside the month of December (but then again, I do live in Asia, so maybe not...). Anyway, I decided to wear it again today for the occasion, and also, now that it's around Christmas time, it's once again acceptable for me to flaunt the reindeer.

I'll be back with some more December-themed pics in a few days, so stay tuned!

Halloween 2012

Happy Halloween!

The Boyfriend and I on our way to the Halloween party.
The Boyfriend and I had so much fun at last year's Halloween party that we decided to go all out again this year. This might become "a thing" until we are really too old and boring to dress up.

This year, The Boyfriend wanted to go as a punk rocker or an '80s rock star. I had no idea what I wanted to wear until I saw an Alice in Wonderland costume and fell in love with it.

Alice in Wonderland
Shopping for our Halloween costumes and accessories is usually a big part of the fun, and we had a hilarious time going through the many costume stores in Taipei and trying on different ridiculous things.

On Saturday, we joined our friends at the same party we went to last year and had an absolute blast. My best friends from South Africa were visiting us here in Taiwan, and it was wonderful that they were able to join us for the Halloween party. We danced until 3 am and then went to one of our favorite 24/7 restaurants for breakfast.

'80s rock star
It was a great night, but I just wish I had taken more pictures, as I saw some really creative and original costumes at the party.

Did you dress up, or are you dressing up, for Halloween this year?

Top 10 Tuesday: Halloween Movies

It's that time of the year; Halloween! Growing up in South Africa, I was deprived of the awesomeness that is Halloween. No trick-or-treating, dressing up in costumes and haunted houses. But, we did get to watch Halloween-type movies.

Although thrillers and horrors aren't my top picks of movie genres, I do enjoy a scary movie once in a blue moon. I try to steer clear of The Exorcist-type movies and would much rather watch a psychological thriller. But, to be totally honest, I get scared easily and I'm one of those people that will wake up in the middle of the night and think: "Hey, you know which movie would be awesome to think about right now? Poltergeist." That's why I mostly stick to the feel-good genres.

On Sunday evening, I finally persuaded The Boyfriend to watch Hocus Pocus with me. Albeit not a scary movie, it is my favorite Halloween movie, and I was appalled by the fact that The Boyfriend, a 29-year old American, has never seen it.

Here are my top 10 picks for Halloween-appropriate movies:
(I also posted links to the movie trailers, but because they are mostly older movies, the quality isn't great.)

1. Scream (1996)

I didn't care much for the other movies that were released after this one, but I really enjoyed the first. When it was released I was still in elementary school, and at that time it was pretty freakin' scary. Watch the trailer here.

2. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

I actually saw this one, the original, for the first time a few years after watching the 2003 remake. (Which is also worth a watch.) The original is way better in my opinion. Watch the trailer here.

3. Beetlejuice (1988)

A classic. I've probably seen this movie more than twenty times, and I'll watch it anytime it's on TV still. Definitely funnier than scary. And a little weird! My favorite part is where they sing that song around the dinner table. Here's the trailer.

4. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Anthony Hopkins was incredible in this movie. I still get the chills when I think about his performance. I'm thinking of watching it again this week, it's been a while. Watch the trailer here.

5. The Addams Family (1991)

Who didn't love this movie as a child? My friends and I watched this a million times. The second one was cute, too. Watch the trailer.

6. Interview with the Vampire (1994)

I've only seen this movie once, when I was very young. But it made a big impact on me and I've never forgotten about it. I should probably watch it again, but I'm afraid it won't be as good as I've built it up in my mind to be. Maybe I should read the book first? Here's the trailer.

7. The Witches (1990)

The Boyfriend and I were just talking about this movie a few weeks ago. I can't remember details in this movie, but I know I watched it more than once as a child and that it was kind of creepy. Here's the trailer

8. Halloween (1978)

What would a list of Halloween movies be without the original Halloween movie? Even though I enjoyed most of the other releases as well, nothing beats the original. You can watch the trailer here.

9. The Craft (1996)

Does anyone remember this movie? My friends and I were obsessed with it and watched it over and over. We even tried to do the magic they do in the movie. It didn't work... Bummer! Here's the trailer.

10. Hocus Pocus (1993)

What's not to love about this movie? I'll probably be watching this with my kids one day. Definitely my favorite Halloween movie. Watch the trailer.

I love fall TAG

It's "tag" time again! The "I love fall TAG" has been floating around the interweb for the past few weeks, and, because I'm a lover of all things fall, I thought it would be fun to answer the questions and tag some other bloggers.

I don't know where it originated and who came up with the questions, but here we go:

Question 1:
What is your favorite fall lip product?

Even though I love the burgundy lipstick trend this year, I'm not brave enough to wear it. My favorite lip product for fall, and basically all year-round, is Blistex DCT lip balm. Out of all the lip balms I've used in my life, and believe me, I've tried a lot, I keep going back to this one. It's not a lip balm that I have to re-apply every 10 minutes, and it keeps dry and chapped lips at bay, especially during the cold, dry months. As far as I know, I can't buy it here in Taiwan, so I usually stock up when I'm in the States or in South Africa.

Question 2:
What is your favorite fall nail polish?

Oh, this is so hard. How can I choose just one!? My most worn colors for fall are different shades of red and burgundy and taupe  Some of my favorites are OPI "Berlin There Done That" , Revlon "Revlon Red" and Essie "Skirting the Issue" .

Question 3:
What is your favorite Starbucks fall drink?

I don't think Starbucks here in Taiwan releases drinks especially for fall. They do have the Christmas drinks during the holidays. I don't get Starbucks often, but during the colder months I will usually opt for the Vanilla Hazelnut Latte or the Caramel Macchiato.

Question 4:
What is your favorite fall candle?

I really love Yankee Candle Farmer's Market. Whenever you pass by a Yankee Candle store, do yourself a favor and get a whiff of this one. It is the perfect fall fragrance. There are some others I want to try out this year as well, you can check out my list of Top 10 Candles for fall & winter.

Question 5:
What is your favorite fall scarf or accessory?

It's all about the leopard print for me this year, so naturally I reach for my leopard print scarf the most. My most worn accessory is the same all year round; my gold Michael Kors watch.

Question 6:
Which is your favorite; haunted house, haunted hay ride or haunted corn maze?

Seeing as I grew up in South Africa where Halloween is not really "celebrated", haunted houses, hay rides and corn mazes are not things that I have ever experienced. It does sound like fun though.

Question 7:
What is your favorite Halloween movie?

No-brainer! Hocus Pocus. Always was, and always will be.

Question 8:
What is your favorite candy to eat on Halloween?

I'm not picky when it comes to candy, as I have an insatiable sweet tooth. I'll eat any candy I can get my hands on really. I do prefer dark chocolate over candy though.

Question 9:
What are you dressing up as for Halloween?

So far I'm planning on dressing up as Alice from Alice in Wonderland. But that's not 100% for sure yet.

Question 10:
What is your favorite thing about fall?

I recently posted the Top 10 Things I love about fall. It's impossible for me to choose just one.

I tag all bloggers reading this, who love fall just as much as I do, to do this tag.

What's your favorite Halloween movie?

Top 10 Tuesday: Things people love... but I don't

You know that situation where you are chatting with a group of people, and they all start raving about something they love. It's usually something that EVERYONE loves, and everyone thinks that everyone is supposed to love it.

Well, it's a little awkward when you don't really share in their enthusiasm. That has happened to me many times. And I've learned that it's better to keep my mouth shut and nod along, than having to defend my dislike and explain why I just don't seem to love it as much as they do.

Of course, everyone has their likes and dislikes, but sometimes you have to defend some of your dislikes a little more than others. So today, I'm going to share the things that everyone seems to love. Everyone, but me.

1. French kissing

To me, there's just something so unromantic and nauseating about two people's tongues caressing each other. Just thinking about it makes me dry heave a little. Luckily, The Boyfriend shares my sentiments on "tongue-kissing" and we work around it.

2. The iPad

Before you start picking up stones and aiming it at me, let me just say that I am indeed a huge Apple fan. I use an iMac, have an iPhone and an iPod. But the iPad? I'm not sold. Three people in my family have one, and they love it. I get it, though, because they travel a lot, and it's easier than carrying around a laptop. But why would you get an iPad at home if you can get a normal computer?

3. Rack of ribs

I don't get excited about getting food all over my hands, my arms and my face and under my nails, when eating. There's not that much meat on it. It's.Just.Too.Hard!

4. Talking on the phone

For as long as I can remember, I've always hated talking on the phone. It fascinates me how The Boyfriend can talk on the phone with his friends and family for hours. I can't do it. I can Skype, for 30 minutes max, but at least then I can see the person I'm talking to. I guess I just like to get right to the point. Which reminds me, I also despise small talk.

5. White chocolate

Believe me, this one is weird to me, too, because I LOVE chocolate and sweets in general. It's just white chocolate that I can't stand. I think it might be because I ate a huge white chocolate Easter bunny when I was five and was sick from it for days...

6. Thongs

I don't know how girls can wear thongs. They are so uncomfortable and are actually bad for your health. Sleeping in one might just be the worst thing in the world.

7. Glee

For someone who usually loves musicals, it was unexpected that I didn't like it. I've tried watching it, to see what the fuss is about and why millions of adults love it. I can't stand the singing. All.The.Time.

8. Litchi (Lychee)

I shiver just thinking about the taste of a litchi. Oh, and the texture. More shivers.

9. Cats

No offense to cat lovers out there, but I just don't like them. They are so weird; doing their own thing and probably plotting among themselves on how they'll take over the world. They creep me out.

10. The Lord of the Rings

...zzz...zzz... I tried, I truly did. I couldn't get through the first movie and decided to read the books. I couldn't get through the books, so I tried to watch the movies again. I just can't.

Do you agree or disagree with me on these? And what is something that you don't like that everyone else seems to love?
